Corporate Profile
Since 3Com's founding in 1979 and creation of the Ethernet standard 30 years ago, the world has embraced its vision of pervasive networking:
- Virtually every personal computer contains a network connection or modem;
- Most businesses are fundamentally built around a flow of information carried by a network; and
- Telecommunications service providers are increasingly using Internet Protocol (IP)-based technologies to deliver new services to their customers and dramatically lower their operating costs.
Today, under the leadership of President and CEO Bruce Claflin, 3Com redefines the way networks are built and is well positioned to lead the industry through a challenging economy. Customers demand new alternatives and improved price/performance ratios. They want low upfront costs, pay-as-they-grow options and the best value for the investment.
Today, 3Com is focused on offering innovative, feature-rich products and solutions that excel at low cost of acquisition and ownership.
During the past two decades, 3Com's team of inventors and engineers has earned more than 917 U.S. patents, with over 873 additional applications pending. In 2001 the company ranked 76th in total U.S. patents secured, well ahead of major networking competitors. Based on this intellectual property portfolio, 3Com has created generations of products that are consistent market share leaders.
Today, as in the past, 3Com will continue to establish new levels of innovation and deliver new products that validate its brand promise to business customers - namely taking what's possible through hard work and innovation and delivering practical products and solutions.
3Com has structured its operations around market needs:
- 3Com Enterprise Networking - provides practical, innovative and high-value converged network infrastructure products, services and solutions for enterprises of all sizes and the public sector; and
- 3Com Connectivity - provides easy-to-use, reliable, high-performance connectivity solutions at the edge of the network.
3Com Enterprise Networking

In order to meet the business and technology needs of customers, 3Com's network infrastructure focuses on the main requirements for fully converged enterprise networks: availability, performance, scalability and ease-of-use. What's unique about the way 3Com delivers this is that this network combines the following capabilities in order to deliver practical-to-use and high-value solutions:
- Network security. 3Com provides security for all areas of the network - from the core to the perimeter and down to the desktop.

Enterprises of all sizes have the goal of operating reliable and cost effective voice and data operations that maximize productivity. Faced with today's economic challenges many enterprises no longer have the luxury of operating disparate networks, and migrating to one network to streamline voice and data operations is a viable solution. Research clearly shows that IP telephony in the enterprise lowers the total cost of network ownership. Yet while cost savings are important, the long-term value proposition of IP telephony is the ability to add new applications that improve employee flexibility and productivity. Companies can significantly enhance business communications through the deployment of new IP-enabled services and applications, such as unified messaging, centralized voice mail, IP-based conferencing, and IP-based call centers.
3Com offers one of the industry's broadest suites of IP telephony solutions to serve enterprises of all sizes - from small and medium-sized enterprises with 40 or fewer phone lines, to large corporations with hundreds of thousands of users across a multi-site environment. By combining and extending industry-leading technologies, including the carrier-class 3Com VCX V7000 (Voice Core eXchange) softswitch and the award-winning NBX® platform, 3Com delivers an IP architecture design and applications capable of creating a return on investment that could result in substantial savings per user per year. The savings occur as a result of 3Com's system ability to:
- Manage multiple locations from a scalable centralized location;
- Reduce operating costs of voice and associated applications for the company's many locations by creating a single network with a single point of management; and
- Deliver new applications that improve employee productivity and responsiveness to customers.
3Com voice solutions allow customers to migrate to IP telephony at their own pace, whether based on comfort level with the technology or depreciation schedules of legacy voice equipment. 3Com IP telephony solutions are open and standards-oriented, so customers can re-use legacy PBX phones and key service units in an IP telephony network at some sites; replace legacy systems with IP telephones at other locations; and deploy centralized call control and common applications across the entire network. Additionally, 3Com's open systems architecture allows third-party voice applications to easily be added.
3Com Connectivity
3Com solutions enable intelligent, secure and seamless connectivity across multiple devices and networks. We develop a full portfolio of connectivity solutions that provide LAN connectivity at the edge of the network. The technologies supported by these products include all speeds of Ethernet and LAN/modem combination products. We offer these technologies in all of the common user configurations and form factors including personal computer interface (PCI) NIC, PCI-X NIC, PC Card, Mini-PCI, universal serial bus (USB), ASICs for LAN on the Motherboard (LOM) and intellectual property for licensing our connectivity technologies to third parties.
3Com network access products are available worldwide to customers through the two-tier distribution channel that leverages the capabilities of 3Com's resellers and channel partners worldwide and direct through PC OEMs such as Gateway and IBM. These industry-leading companies build 3Com connectivity solutions into their server, desktop and notebook products.
